Pillowman Final Scene Report
The play The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh is about a writer named Kutarian who got interrogated by two detectives Ariel the bad cop and Tupolski the good cop for the murder of the three children. All of the children die the same way as it was written in Kutarian’s stories. Throughout the play we come to find out that Kutarian’s brother was the murder killing the children. Michal his brother had extensive brain damage which makes him act much more childlike. Which allows him to take the stories seriously and misinterpret them. After his brothers confession to him Kutarian decides to murder his brother and take the blame for killing his family and all the children for the exchange of his stories being saved. The main lesson throughout the story is that depending on the way you are raised can affect the way someone acts as they grow older. The reader can see this from Kutarian, Michal, and Ariel’s childhood. Kutarian was raised hearing sounds of someone being totarted every night and also being treated as the perfect child. Which is why he is very good at writing dark stories about the death of children. Michal on the other hand was abused all his life so that's why he thinks all children will grow up and have terrible lives. Ariel on the other hand is such an aggressive cop because she also got abused as a child and tries to take her anger out on the world. The pillowman is a dark drama due to the stories of the children's death and it takes an unexpected path of events. But it can also be seen as a tragedy because of all the death surrounded by the story and the upsetting events that take place.
The main characters of The Pillowman are Kutarian, Michal, Ariel, and Tupolski. Kutarian wants his stories to go on so he can continue his legacy as a writer. Michal wants to understand Kutarian and make him feel how he felt growing up. Tupolski wants to find out the truth about what's going on with the disappearance of children. Ariel understands what the brothers went through and wants to be more sympathetic and save the stories. In the Pillowman final scene report I played Michal. Michal’s given circumstances are he was abused as a child , he would read Katurian stories, mentally disabled, murder, mom and dad killed by brother. When Michal and Katurian were arguing Katurain states “ Mum and Dad kept their first-born son in a room where they tortured him for seven straight years, and you made a little boy bleed to death, made a little girl choke to death, did God knows what to another little girl..(pg.37).” In this part it shows how he was tortured and what he did as he got older because of the effect of his parents abusing him. Also when Katurian is trying to figure out why Michal killed the children Michal states that all children are going to lead horrible lives and that he killed the kids because Katurian told him to by reading the stories. That is because Michal is metally-ill and instead of acting like an older brother he is more of a son to Katurian. Michal wants to fulfill Katurian’s stories by putting them into action and also wants Katurian to understand how he felt for all those years.
In the scene I choose Katurian and Michal are just meeting up together after getting interrogated. Katurian wants comfort after being interrogated by the cops and tries to hug Michal's leg. When Katurian finds out that Michal told them everything and didn't get tortured the mood in the room quickly changes. Katurian begins thinking of different ways to get out of the situation they are in. Michal wants Katurian to feel the way he did as a child while he was getting tortured and his brother was getting praised. When Katurian wants comfort from Michal he crawls on the floor to hug his leg to show compassion. Also Michals acts very aloof when Katurian is questioning him. He follows Katurian lead and acts as if he doesn't know that he actually killed the children. The obstacels in the scence are that they havent get out of being excuted for thee murder of three chilren. Also they have to continue their lives after being abused as children. McDonagh was born in London, England in 1970. He also frequently integrates dark comedy into his films.
Okay I will get on it.
Keon,
While this is a great write up on the Pillowman, Journal #2 was to be a report on a different play.
Please choose one of the following scripts to read. They are located in the Script File on Blackboard on the Course Content page. The same file that the Pillowman was in.
Read one these four plays, then answer the questions listed under Journal Entry #2.
Here are the plays you can choose from:
Nursing by Adam Rapp
This is a realistic play that has a Sci-Fi bent. It imagines a world where illness has been eradicated and only exists in a museum. Dark and twisty.
Vigils by Noah Haidle
This is whimsical comedy of sorts about a woman who keeps the soul of her husband in a box. Beautiful, funny, and a touch sad.
Water By The Spoonful by Quiara Alegría Hudes
A slick play about a group if recovering addicts using on-line message boards and chats to support each other. Both funny and poignant.
Really by Jackie Sibblies Drury
A girlfriend sits the mother of her recently deceased boyfriend down to shoot a portrait. Lovely and moving with a dash of comedy
